While we prepare our exhibition and portfolio images for the official launch of the ELearning at UWE island we are pressing forward with a new project in conjunction with the University of the West of England, Bristol.
A key question for educators looking to use Second Life and virtual worlds in general is "what can we do with this platform that we cannot achieve elsewhere?" One very good answer to this is their use as training simulators. A training simulator provides a realistic environment and managed student roleplay to deliver practical lessons aimed at developing key practical skills and critical thinking.
The Citrus Virtual Educational Simulator System being developed for the university on the Second Life platform, later to be available to future clients, will provide tutor managed custom scenarios designed to allow learning by role play as well as playback with the option to pause at key moments. It will allow integration with real documents and learning material websites. Accesible with a minimum of familiarity with Second Life controls and modular in design, the simulator system will provide a flexible and affordable solution for the delivery of tailored learning scenarios.
